The PFΣD - A PcBoard Style BBS Complete File Area Manager
Coded by BOOMER (Gene Layton)
INTRODUCTION:
═════════════
This is a evaluation copy of a File Area Manager and upload
processor for PCBoard, TriBBS, System-X, and Express BBS's.
PFΣD is not crippled but expires about a month after each version
is released. If you would like to register this program the fee
is $15.00. You will receive the latest version of PFΣD, and a
personalized key that does not expire. See REGISTER.FRM for
more information.
This package also contains a full PCB standalone upload processor
identical to the internal local version called BOOMLAB. It
is $10.00 to register and only $5.00 if also registering PFED.
See BOOMLAB.DOC for more info.
NOTE: You should backup your conference dir text files before
evaluating this program, and be advised:
■■■■ USE AT YOUR OWN RISK, I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANYTHING!!! ■■■■
Please let me know of any problems or suggestions on the LCS
Support at [4o7] 898-4148. Leave E-Mail for BOOMER.
INSTALLATION:
═════════════
Unzip PFΣD into it's own SEPERATE directory i.e. C:\PFED
PFΣD can also be installed by typing INSTALL C: or INSTALL D:
from another dir or diskette. PFΣD works fine on networks
such as Netware and Netware Lite. So it can be installed on
a client machine if you wish. After PFΣD is installed run
PSETUP to setup the program. Make sure to complete all
information to fully utilize PFΣD. You will be prompted to
copy your PCBOARD.DAT or CONFIG.BBS to the \PFED directory,
this is critical and must be done or the program will not
function properly. Also, when any changes are made to your
BBS file areas you should repeat this process or changes
won't also be implemented into PFΣD.
UPDATING NEW VERSIONS:
══════════════════════
Thanks to all the PFED users I am constantly adding features
or fixing bugs. To correctly update PFED without overwritting
any data files you've modified use the UPDATE.BAT file supplied
with PFED. Unzip the PFED_###.ZIP to a diskette or temporary
directory and type UPDATE followed by the location of where
PFED resides - Example: UPDATE D:\PFED
EGA/VGA SUPPORT: (43/50 lines)
════════════════
PFΣD can be used in 25, 43 (EGA) & 50 (VGA) line modes. Set
the default screen mode in PSETUP (question #2). Additionaly,
In the area DIR keys <2>, <4>, and <5> will switch the screen
mode to that mode. (2 = 25 line mode, 4 = 43 etc...)
DISK CACHES:
═══════════
PFΣD works much differently then say PCBFiler. It loads the
text file and converts to a another type of file. It's doing
this when it prints "INDEXING: ....". This 'strategy' permits
large (10,000 files) text directories to be edited and sorted
without using memory. It however make take a few seconds or
more ;) To greatly speed up this process a disk cache such
as MicroSoft's SMARTDRV should be used IF possible.
MEMORY REQUIREMENTS:
═══════════════════
PFΣD uses overlays to reduce the amount of memory it requires.
Once an overlay is loaded and EMS is present these Overlays will
remain in EMS until needed. Currently PFΣD requires approx.
220k of conventional memory to operate.
DESQVIEW SETUP:
══════════════
Most sysops use DesqView (DV) to run PFΣD. The PSETUP program
will prompt each time whether to install the Desqview PIF to
your DV directory. It is a good idea to do this the first
time, and then every once in awhile as I've been optimizing the
settings from Beta reports. Make sure to set Text Pages to 4
or you wont see many of the screens. If some functions in
┌── PFΣD, such as adopting files, start to get slower and slower

COMMAND LINE SWITCHES
═════════════════════
Download Counter
────────────────
To add 'Times Downloaded: ##' to the file description add
PFED TIMESDL to the nightly batch event. PFΣD uses the
transfer log (Ex: DOWNLOAD.TXT) and adds how many times a
file was downloaded. PFΣD prefers not to delete the transfer
log as it uses it when nuking files, so it will read from where
it left off the previous time run. It should be run in a
nightly event batch, from the PFΣD dir (CD\PFED), when NO
callers are online. Color can be added to the line in
PSETUP, question #11. PCB Color code's (@X) ONLY.
Only selected conference #'s and area #'s can processed by
adding them to the command line. Conferences can be listed
using commas and or ranges.
Ex: PFED TIMESDL 0,2-5,7,9-19
To select only specific areas in a conf add the area #'s in
parenthesis after the conf #.
Ex: PFED TIMESDL 0(1-20,22),2-5,7,9-19
If no conferences or areas are specified ALL are selected.
Ex: PFED TIMESDL
Master Filelist
───────────────
PFΣD can create a Master file list by running PFED LIST from
the PFΣD directory. Any headers (%) will be included and any
PCB graphics or ANSi codes in the file descriptions or headers
will be converted to ASC text. The output file will be named
FILES.LST. As with the download counter you can add the conf
#'s to specify make master list for only those conferences.
The event batch should look something like this:
CD\PFED
PFED LIST
PKZIP D:\UPLOADS\ALLFILES.ZIP FILES.LST
Only selected conference #'s and area #'s can processed by
adding them to the command line. Conferences can be listed
using commas and or ranges.
Ex: PFED LIST 0,2-5,7,9-19
To select only specific areas in a conf add the area #'s in
parenthesis after the conf #.
Ex: PFED LIST 0(1-20,22),2-5,7,9-19
If no conferences or areas are specified ALL are selected.
Ex: PFED LIST
Sort Directories
────────────────
PFΣD can sort directories from the command line. Only
selected conference #'s and area #'s can processed by adding
them to the command line. Conferences can be listed using
commas and or ranges.
Ex: PFED SORT 0,2-5,7,9-19
To select only UPLOAD areas to sort, add the switch UPLOADS
to the command line.
Ex: PFED SORT 0,2-5,7,9-19 UPLOADS
To select only specific areas in a conf add the area #'s in
parenthesis after the conf #.
Ex: PFED SORT 0(1-20,22),2-5,7,9-19
If no conferences or areas are specified ALL are selected.
Ex: PFED SORT

Converts PFΣD to 24 line mode (See Remote Setup w/DOORWAY)
CD-ROM/FILES.BBS SUPPORT
════════════════════════
From the file directory menu there are two keys that may
be of assistance in adding areas and files from CD-ROM's.
<F> - Will read the master FILES.BBS in the root directory
of the CD-ROM and add each area to the conf and import
the files & descriptions from the FILES.BBS in each
area. All you have to do is enter the path to the
main or master FILES.BBS, usually found in the CD's
root dir. If found it will prompt where to output
the DIR description files it will create. Before an
area is added the config for each will be displayed
with the option to edit it, add it, not add it, and
add all areas without prompts. If the data doesn't
look correct then the import probally won't work as
PFED doesn't support the FILES.BBS format. (See below)
<G> - For highlighted area you can read a single FILES.BBS
import the files and descriptions for that area only.
Supported MASTER FILES.BBS formats:
1 -> FILES.001: \GAMES\ARCADE [Arcade Games]
2 -> \GAMES\ARCADE,Arcade Games
3 -> \GAMES\ARCADE Arcade Games
Supported DESCRIPTION FILES.BBS formats:
1 -> GAME.ZIP This is kewl game!
2 -> GAME.ZIP 331023 12-21-94 This is a kewl game!
3 -> GAME.ZIP [0] This is a kewl game!
4 -> GAME.ZIP 331,023 03-03-95 This is a kewl game!
If a FILES.BBS your trying to import is not supported by
PFED you can send it to me and I'll try to add it, there
doesn't seem to be a standard format.
DUPE CHECKER & REMOVER
══════════════════════
<D> from the main conference or directory menus will 1)Scan
all DIR files for description dupes, then 2)Scan all BBS
subdirectory files for duplicate files. The 'dupes' can be
viewed, printed OR removed.
The dupe remover displays each dupe and the DIR's or subdir's
it was found in. Select dupe to delete by selecting the
corresponding #. <A>=Selects all listed dupes. There are
global keys: <D>=Tag all dupes from a specific dir. <T>=Tag
all dupes but the first listed. Press <Esc> when done. It will
then remove all tagged dupes. NOTE: This should be done with
users offline.
FILE NUKING∙BONUS CREDIT∙WARNINGS
═════════════════════════════════
FILE NUKING
───────────
To NUKE files tag the bad boys then press CTRL + 'N'.
When you 'NUKE' a file in PFΣD it deletes the file and
leaves a 0-Byte file so it can't be re-uploaded again.
PFΣD attempts to locate the uploader's name in the file
description, if not found it will prompt for manual name
entry. If this name is not found in the user base, PFΣD
will ask if you'd like to search the transfer log. (PCB)
PFΣD will then ask for each a reason and factor to nuke by.
You can use macros (See MACROS) to make this easier. The
offending user's byte credit will be reduced by the
filesize times the Nuke Factor. PFΣD lastly asks "Restore
Downloader's Credit (Y/n)", it will scan the transfer log
and restore credit for anyone downloading the nuked file.
If your a PCBoard user, you can use the PFEDNUKE.PPE to
leave mail to or delete the culprits. (See PFEDNUKE.PPE)
BONUS CREDIT
────────────
If you want to reward a user for a 'special' upload tag the
file(s) and press CTRL + 'B'. It will prompt for each,
reason and 'bonus factor'. You can use defined Macros. (see
MACROS) The user will be awarded filesize times the Bonus
Factor. If using PFEDNUKE.PPE, (PCB Only) it can write a
letter to the user with the Bonus info. (See PFEDNUKE.PPE)
WARNINGS (PCBoard ONLY)
────────
If you have some reason to warn a user, say he didn't upload
all files of a set, and you'd like to issue him a letter
stating such then tag the file(s) and press CTRL + 'W'. It
will prompt for reason for warning for each file. You can
use Macros for these. (See MACROS) You must use PFEDNUKE.PPE
to use this function. (See PFEDNUKE.PPE)
MACROS
──────
MACROS is a macro text file for the File Nuker, File Bonus, and
Warning Letter procedures. It contains macros for reasons and
credit nuked or bonus given. So you won't have to enter the
text and factor manually each time. Each macros section needs
to start with a header that appears EXACTLY as follows:
[-NUKE-] - Start of the File Nuker Macros.
[-BONUS-] - Start of the File BONUS Macros.
[-END-] - End of Macros
Sample Macro Entry
┌── Macro # followed by end parenthesis, maximum of 16 total.
│
│ ┌ Macro abbreviations, displays on help window. max 12 chars.
│ │
│ │ ┌── Nuke or Bonus factor, -1 means ask each time
1)ANCIENT,2
THIS FILE IS OLDER THAN HELL ─── Message entered to file desc
and when PPE is sending mail
length should be 35 characters
at the most.
PFEDNUKE.PPE
────────────
This PPE can be found in the PFEDNUKE.ZIP in this package.
It requires PcBOARD 15.1 or higher. The purpose of this PPE
is to read the PFEDNUKE.LOG created by PFΣD File Area Manager
v.41 or higher and leave E-Mail to or delete the offending
users. When the sysop logs into the system he can run this
BBS, run PFEDNUKE and it will prompt for each file:
(Only shows Delete User on file Nuked)
(W)rite Message, (D)elete User, (S)kip, or (Q)uit.
PFΣD maintains the PFEDNUKE.LOG main data dir (\PCB\MAIN or whatever)
and it is deleted after the PFEDNUKE.PPE is completely run.
I'm including the source (.PPS) in case anybody wants to add
to....example search DOWNLOAD.TXT and give downloading users back
their credit, or whatever. If improvements are made please
send me a copy on BubbaLand II.
PFEDNUKE INSTALLATION:
≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈
1) Run PCBSETUP
2) Do, B (File Location), B (Configuration files), move the
cursor down to 'Name/Location of Default CMD.LST' and
press F2.
3) Add PFEDNUKE to list - Example:

VIRUS SCANNING
══════════════
Upload Processing (BOOMLAB)
─────────────────
PFED fully supports virus scanning of local uploads using the
BOOMLAB upload processor. 1 of 5 virus scanners can be used
or even a combination of the 5!. Can scan all files or only
executables, supports heuristic scans, and can use a RAM
drive to extracts file to. Use PSETUP.EXE to configure and
see BOOMLAB.DOC for more information.
Supported Scanners Proggy Req Recommended Switches
──────────────────── ──────── ───── ────────────────────
1) McAfee's SCAN v119 (SCAN) 488k /A /NOMEM /NOPAUSE /SUB
2) McAfee's SCAN v2.1.4 (SCAN) ? /ALL /NOMEM /NOBREAK
3) ThunderByte v6.32 (TBSCAN) 256k NM NB
4) Dr. Solomons v6.64 (FINDVIRU) ? /NOBOOT /NOPART /DOALLFILES
5) F-PROT v2.14 (F-PROT) ? /A /NOBOOT /NOMEM
6) AVScan v1.91 (AVSCAN) Lots /NM /NB /NESC /Q /R
+) Use Multiple Scanners (SEE BOOMLAB.DOC)
If there is a problem with memory try #2-New SCAN, #3-ThunderByte,
or #4-Dr. Solomon's as they workly nicely in limited memory.
#5-F-Prot is a tight fit and #1-Old Scan probally wont fit.
Scanning in DOS and Archive Viewers
───────────────────────────────────
PFΣD can scan files in both DOS and archive viewers, but uses
a seperate scanner setup. Define the virus scanner to use in
the 'External Programs' section of PSETUP. Use the recommended
switches as shown above.
Getting Virus Descriptions (ALT+V)
──────────────────────────
PFED has a key (ALT+V) for virus collectors and researchers
that will get the virus name for the description for all
tagged files. Default method is to display only the virus name.
Desc Example: JERUSALE.1808 STANDARD virus
However, if you want to customize the output to your liking
create a text file named VIRUSADD.TXT in the directory.
(See BOOMLAB.DOC for more information)
EXTERNAL PROGRAMS
═════════════════
GIF Viewers
───────────
To view GIF files online and in archives, a GIF Viewer must be
set in PSETUP. PFΣD recommends VPIC by Bob Montgomery with the
switch of '/A' for auto-detect video mode.
PCBoard Node Monitor
────────────────────
The 'N' key from any menu runs the PCBoard Node Monitoring
utility (PCBMONI) A really nice feature for multi-node BBS's.
This program must be in the path or copied to where PFΣD resides.
It monitors who is online and what they are doing. Press the
spacebar to view detailed user information for that node.
Remote Setup w/DOORWAY
──────────────────────
PFΣD can be setup as a DOOR for remote sysops. Included in
this package is a file named DOORWAY.BAT that you may find
usefull. Edit to your specifics (comm port & path to where
PCBOARD.SYS is writted) and rename to something like 'PFED'
or whatever name you want for the door. Below is my doorway
command line and an explanation of the switches.
doorway com2 /b:x /v:d^O /m:600 /g:on /o:t /k:v0 [Cont.]
/s:l:\bbs\pcb\node%pcbnode% /p:pfed.exe -r
com2 = Comm Port [CHANGE THIS! (if necessary)]
/b:x = dont print on line 25
/v:d^O = Video - use direct screen writes
/m:600 = Minutes allowed in Doorway
/g:on = ANSi graphics ON
/o:t = Skip Doorway title screen
/k:v0 = keyboard timeouts (off)
/s:path = Dir to locate PCBOARD.SYS file [CHANGE THIS!]
PCBOARD.SYS is created when it shells to the door.
/p:pfed -r = run program PFED with -r remote switch
(PFED 24-line screen mode)
